and for a weekend … NOT miles apart!

FL Sister id tagEveryone within a 100 mile radius  is aware that my sister is coming to town. They know because I tell them. It is obviously BIG NEWS to me. And I want to share the joy of it – even with random strangers.

We are used to working in spite of the geographical distance but we get our best work down when we are together. And we will be working. Really we will.

And it’s not too late for you to join us.

Grandmother's mug rug sm Here is a sneak peak at the English Paper Piecing Class that we will host at Martelli’s in Pensacola on Friday, January 17 from 6:30-8:30.

This English Paper Piecing class is one of several classes that spotlight the techniques used to complete the Mother’s Medallion quilt. There is also foundation paper piecing, stained glass, dimensional flowers, needle turn applique, crazy quilting and a couple of others still in process. (Look carefully and you’ll be able to see the individual projects created with the different techniques.)

Then on Saturday, we’ll be doing the Apple Core class using the Saucy Chef collection. That class is at A&E Variety Store in Pensacola from 10am-2pm. You can register directly with the store or by contacting us via email.

Details on that class can be seen on the Sept. 11, 2013 blog post.

So, come join us for one of these classes – cause my sister is coming to town!

Saucy Chef towel & a recipe

As we post another Post Card pattern for our Saucy Chef collection (Purchase Kitchen Towel post card by sending an email to SistersAtHeartMilesApart@gmail.com), it’s undeniable how much of our sister connection is kitchen related.

kitchen towel sm

We both love pretty kitchen linens (new and vintage),

we both like to try new recipes,

and we both have family favorites that we can make from memory.

One favorite recipe that is the exception to that “from memory” rule is the Fresh Veggie Pizza recipe.

veggie pizza

At least once a year, one of us calls the other one to say …

“HELP!!! I can’t find my recipe card and I need you to remind me how to make that.”

(Okay, maybe one of us tends to call the other one more often.

But, let’s keep the guilty party un-identified for harmony’s sake.)

In memory of those phone calls, and our Kitchen Sister connection, here is that recipe:

2 pkg (8 oz) refrigerated crescent rolls.

1 pkg (8oz) cream cheese

1 C mayo

1 oz dry Ranch dressing

3 C chopped or shredded veggies (broccoli, tomato, green bell pepper, cauliflower, shredded carrots) I added onion once and the result was legendary – not so good

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).

Roll out the crescent roll dough on a pizza stone or cookie sheet. Pinch together edges to form the pizza crust.

Bake crust for 12 minutes in the preheated oven. Let the crust cool 15 minutes without removing it from the baking sheet.

Combine cream cheese, mayonnaise, and dry Ranch dressing. Or use cream cheese and bottled dressing. Spread the mixture over the cooled crust.

Arrange chopped veggies (broccoli, tomato, green bell pepper, cauliflower, shredded carrots) and shredded cheese (Cheddar, Provolone, or a mixture) over the cream cheese layer.

Chill for one hour, slice and serve.

More Saucy Chef … Apron & Mini Mitt

A Saucy Chef collection just wouldn’t be complete without an apron.

Matter of fact, the apron is the first piece of the collection that was actually stitched.

Apron - Saucy Chef sm

This pattern is full of options: lots of mustaches to choose from …

and you can choose to stitch your own apron or use a pre-made apron as the base for your Saucy Chef. Once the apron is in place, you add sassy ric-rac trim and pockets across the front.

The pattern includes a Mini Mitt that is so Quick and Easy to stitch!

The Martelli Apple Core no-slip template “grips” through multiple layers of fabric and allows you to cut all the Apple Core pieces at once.

And we’ve made the Mini Mitt available as a Post Card pattern, too.

(A Post Card pattern is the size and look of a vintage post card, and it unfolds to reveal instructions and line drawings.)

And there’s more coming so stop by again soon.

Inspire me! Vintage chef light switch

We’re so excited to see our Saucy Chef collection come to life.

The thought occurred to me, though, that we should pause a minute and remember what it was that inspired the whole thing.

Our mother cooked from many different kitchens over the years of her life

(a dude ranch, a cow camp, small parsonages, a log mountain home, a cozy house in a farm town)

and this chef has been on many, many of those kitchen walls.

She made a little bit stretch, tried new things, taught us both to cook and never leave dishes until the next day.

Now our dad is the chief cook in that kitchen and the chef is still there keeping an eye on things. If he could talk, we’re sure he’d say something like, “I sure like salty beans!” and then he’d laugh ’til he needed to wipe his eyes.

Saucy Chef Class & Fireworks

This past Saturday started with a bang and ended with a bang.

Just as we got set up for the Saucy Chef Workshop at Martelli’s classroom,

(where there was plenty of room to display quilts and set up workstations.)

the thunder started booming and the rain started pouring!

It was a perfect day to stay inside with stitching sisters.

Nothing better on a rainy day than the hummmmmmmm of sewing machines.

Here are some of the stitchers who used everything from classic featherweights to the newest computerized version (Pamela won that at the last Martelli Open House.

Everyone unwrapped their “brown paper packages tied up with string” to find the fabric, trim,

templates, and a CurveMaster.

The new Saucy Chef Post Card patterns for the Mini Mitt and the Kitchen Towel were at the focus of the class and we introduced the new Apple Core template. These are really quick projects because you can cut so many layers at once with the template.

(To get your very own pattern, order one via email to SistersAtHeartMilesApart@gmail.com.)

The day really did end with a bang because the Mr and I went to a Blue Wahoo baseball game

(they won with the 7th ending comeback), got to meet Kazoo, the mascot, and …

the night ended with an impressive fireworks display! Who could ask for more?

Saucy Chef: some lovin’ from your oven!

FL Sister id tagBecause we have lived “miles apart” most of our adult lives, we’ve learned to accept the reality that we miss part of each other’s lives and we miss out on the front row seats for watching each other’s children grow up.

So, when my sister’s youngest daughter was choosing a culinary school to attend and I knew one of her choices was Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts, you can surely believe that I was cheering for her to choose the one close to where we lived.

Megan the chef

And that’s how we came to have a year with a chef as our housemate/tenant/companion.

(The Mr. was especially delighted when she was doing the baking unit of study/practice.

I specifically remember a pear tart … )

SO when a bridal shower was given this spring for this delightfully creative niece,

it was time for our Really Big Hat Chef to make his appearance.

And that’s how we came to have the Saucy Chef collection.

He comes with a variety of mustaches to choose from.

The whole collection is based on the traditional Apple Core block.

Sisters at Heart apple coreWe’ve put the Apple Core as the base block for a Saucy Chef Table Runner with color placement that blends from light to dark, ombre style. The pattern includes the new Martelli Apple Core no-slip template (which you can purchase by itself HERE.)

Our family chef shows her affection for others by producing delectable dining delights from her oven.

We hope that this Saucy Chef collection will inspire you to do the same!

Share some lovin’ from your oven!

Come back by in a couple of days and we’ll show you the rest of the collection.
